一天，有个沙门进城，挨家挨户乞食 ，结果一无所获，最后来到长者大富豪的家门口，这才得到一钵盂粗劣的饭食。
沙门拿着钵盂正要出城，迎面走来一个屠户，怀里抱一只狗，准备带回家去宰杀。
屠户看见沙门，心生欢喜，于是上前行礼。
沙门合十祝愿：“愿你延年益寿！”
沙门已经知道屠户想要杀狗，故意问他：“你今天出门带回来什么？”
屠户答道：“没有什么。”
沙门又说：“我已经看见了，请你交出来吧，我要用这些饭菜换你的狗，救它一命。”
屠户答道：“不行，没有这个，我们一家都会饿死的。”
沙门再三劝告，屠户始终不肯听从。
沙门万般无奈，只好对屠户说：“可以让我看一下吧？”
屠户这才拿出狗来，放在沙门面前。
沙门将自己要来的饭菜喂狗，抚摩着狗为它祝愿，狗流泪了。
沙门十分诚恳地对狗说：“由于你的罪业，现在你就要被杀，不得自在。愿你今后生生世世灭罪生福，脱离狗身，获得人身，得遇三宝加持！”
这只狗最终还是被杀了，不过临死前因为吃了沙门这顿饭，生起向善的心，命终投生到豪贵大长者家中，刚生下他就有慈悲心。
后来，那个沙门到长者家乞食，长者的孩子此刻已经满七岁，看见沙门进来，回忆起过去的因缘，就上前向沙门接足顶礼 ，请沙门接受自己的供养，随后进屋告诉父母（他只有七岁）：“我现在想跟着大和尚走，奉受经戒，当他的弟子。”
父母很宠爱他，不愿意让孩子出家。孩子啼哭不已，不进食、不喝水，并发誓说：“你们不让我去，我不如饿死吧。”
父母亲看到孩子如此地坚定，实在没有办法，就让他跟随沙门学佛了。
这个小孩剃掉头发，披上三件法衣，很快获得三昧，立于不退转的境地，其后他还教化众生发大道意，弘扬佛法。
这个故事就是告诉大家，只要你肯改，这个世界一切都可以变；你不想改，这个世界一切都不能变。</span>
