<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">迦旃延尊者，又称作摩诃迦旃延，是佛陀时代西印度阿槃提国人。他从小受到舅父阿私陀仙人的影响，精通吠陀圣典（吠陀，是一种古老的赞美诗、祈祷文，是印度人世代相传的知识、启示），包括占星术、各种印度的古文。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">相传当时印度国内有一座古碑，上面的文字没有一个人认识。国王贴出榜文诏示全国：有能识者，予以重赏。迦旃延他认识，就过去把榜揭下来，很轻易地译出了碑文。碑文译出来了，但是碑文的内容他不知道。遵照舅父的指点，他到竹林精舍请教佛陀，详细地了解碑文的内容。原来，这座碑讲的是断烦恼、证菩提的道理。迦旃延听了佛陀的讲解之后，对佛陀的学识和思想特别佩服“佛陀居然能够把一座古碑文都讲出来”，觉得佛教有真理。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">迦旃延除了精勤修道之外，他投身于弘扬佛法的事情。迦旃延思想敏捷，辩才无碍，说理透彻，在佛弟子中成为“论议第一”。他擅长辩论，很多外道（就是另外的法门，过去讲“外道”并不是贬义词，我们学佛法，其他法门不是佛道的就叫“外道”），当时很多外道的人来找他辩论，不少人在他的善巧开示下步入佛道。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">当时阿盘提国有一位贫苦无依的老妇女，家境非常贫困，她走到河边放声痛哭，欲寻短见。迦旃延见状，急忙上前。迦旃延得知那位妇女是因贫穷所致，便善巧方便教她“卖贫”之法。卖贫的方法叫“行布施”，就是帮助别人、照顾别人、对别人好……老妇依此而行布施，最后终于生到忉利天宫。卖贫，不停地布施，最后得到的是境界和善德。这个故事叫“迦旃延教老母卖贫”。迦旃延弘法的地方多选在当时佛法没有普及的西印度，他是佛法传播的开路先锋。</span>
