<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">阿那律是甘露饭王的次子，当时把他名字译为“阿㝹楼陀”，意思是“无贫”、“如意”，没有贫困，非常如意。实际上，他在过去生中已经成为辟支佛了。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">阿那律是摩诃男的亲弟弟，摩诃男是佛陀的堂弟。当年佛成道六年之后，回到他的故乡迦毗罗卫城说法教化，看到自己的亲弟弟难陀沉溺于孙陀罗的姿色之中，如果由难陀继承王位，国家一定会很快灭亡；他的儿子罗侯罗又是一个孩子，也不能担负起治国的重任。那时唯有度他们两人出家，将王位继承权让给有作为的人，国家以后才会兴旺，于是度难陀和罗侯罗出家。果然，这两位皇宫里的大人物出家了。这时候，阿难、提婆达多、婆娑、跋提、阿那律五位王子全部跟着佛陀出家了。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">佛陀对于他们释迦族的出家人要求特别严格。有一次，佛在说法，阿那律打瞌睡，佛陀就批评他说：“咄咄汝好睡，螺蛳蚌蛤类，一睡一千年，不闻佛名字。”阿那律一听到佛陀的批评，马上跪下来，求忏悔，说：“佛陀，我从今后，尽形寿不再睡眠。”没多久，阿那律因不睡觉患了眼病。佛知道之后，就关心他说：“修行不食，固然不行，太过了也不行。一切众生都要有食物才能生存。耳以声为食，鼻以香为食，舌以味为食，眼以睡眠为食。修道也是这样，涅槃以不放逸为食，无为境界以禅悦法喜为食。你应以睡眠保护眼睛。”就请名医为他治疗。阿那律倔强地回答说：“佛陀，我发了誓，尽形寿不再睡眠。”依然不肯睡眠，不久眼睛瞎了。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(100, 100, 100);">在僧团内规定，比丘乞食回来，要将一份留给病比丘食用。衣服破了、脏了，同住的比丘要予以补洗。后来阿那律的三衣破得实在不能再穿了，阿难为他缝制了一套新的三衣。佛陀知道此事，对阿难非常敬佩。</span>
